Fall 2023 Workshops

To register, students must email tholland1@unm.edu with the name/date of the workshop and specify whether they would like to attend in person or virtually. Workshop attendances are at no cost to students. 

Mental Health Workshops Fall 2023 

Adjusting to College Life

College is an exciting time. However, it can also come with many challenges. This workshop is designed to help new students adjust to life in college. There is also information in this workshop that will pertain to international students and first generation students.

Students will learn:

  • Changing relationships with family and friends during college.
  • Managing loneliness and unhappiness (especially during the adjustment period) during college
  • Basic time management
  • Practicing self-care, even with a busier schedule
  • Handling their newfound freedom at college
  • How to cope with moving away from home

Dates:

  • September 12th: 2-3:30pm
  • September 13th: 9:30-11am
  • September 14th: 12-1:30pm 

 

Establishing Boundaries

Scheduled before Thanksgiving, this workshop will teach students how to communicate and establish healthy boundaries in relationships (general relationships: could be applied to friends, family, romantic partners, etc.)

Students will learn: 

  • Importance of establishing boundaries in relationships
  • How to communicate with loved ones
  • How boundaries are important for your mental health
  • Why boundaries are needed in healthy relationships

Date: November 22nd: 2-3:30pm

 

Getting Good Sleep

A good night’s sleep has great health benefits like improving memory, boosting energy, and supporting your immune system. Despite these benefits, many adults (1 in 3 to be exact) skimp on sleep. Learn how to have good “sleep hygiene” by learning the practices, habits and environmental factors that are important to getting sound sleep.

Students will learn:

  • How to follow your Circadian Rhythm
  • How to keep sleep stressors under control
  • The importance of establishing a sleep routine
  • How diet, exercise, and electronics before bed affect your sleep

Date: November 1st: 2-3:30pm

 

Mindfulness 101

Mindfulness has been a very popular topic in psychology for its mental health benefits. But what is mindfulness? Where did it come from? How do you practice mindfulness? This workshop will discuss the origins of mindfulness, it’s impact on mental health, as well as how to establish a consistent mindfulness practice

Students will learn: 

  • What mindfulness is
  • How to practice mindfulness in daily life
  • How mindfulness can impact your mental health
  • How to create a mindful practice routine 

Date: September 11th: 12-1:30pm

 

Money on the Mind

Most, if not all, college students are worried about finances. Student loans, monthly bills, and emergency expenses can all add up to make making ends meet difficult.

Students will learn

  • budgeting skills
  • financial stress management
  • avoiding impulsive financial decisions
  • utilizing the financial resources on campus.

Date: October 4th: 2-3:30pm

 

Overcoming Stress and Anxiety

There are many causes for stress and anxiety while attending college. Academic stress, social stress, and physical stress all affect mental health. This interactive workshop will provide tools for reducing stress and anxiety, especially during challenging times.

Students will learn:

  • How stress impacts daily life
  • What anxiety and stress can look like
  • Ways to decrease stress and anxiety
  • How to deal with stress and anxiety in difficult times

Date: October 25th: 2-3:30pm

 

Question, Persuade, Refer: Three Steps Anyone Can Learn to Help Prevent Suicide

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer -- the three simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands each year, this workshop teaches how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help.

Students will learn: 

  • How to recognize the signs of suicidality
  • What we know about suicide
  • How to support someone who is struggling

Dates:

  • September 20th: 2-3pm
  • October 18th: 2-3pm
  • November 15th: 2-3pm

 

Resilience in Hard Times

Resilience can offset factors that increase the risk of mental health conditions, such as previous trauma. Learn ways to recover quickly from difficulties.

Students will learn:

  • How previous trauma can impact mental health
  • How hard times in life can bring up past issues
  • How to practice resilience 
  • Ways to increase resiliency 

Date: November 8th: 2-3:30pm 

 

Surviving Midterms/Surviving Finals

These workshops are designed to teach students study skills and self-care tips to ensure that they don’t burn out during midterms/finals week.

Stressed about midterms? Attend this workshop to learn new study skills and self-care tips to help avoid burn out during this stressful time.

Students will learn: 

  • Self-care tips and wellness tips
  • What burnout is and how to avoid it
  • Study skills to for the intensity of finals/midterms

Dates:

Midterms

  • October 3rd: 2-3:30pm
  • October 5th: 12-1:30p

Finals

  • November 28th: 2-3:30pm
  • November 30th: 12-1:30pm

 

Turning Busy into Balance

In college, you may feel like there are too many responsibilities pulling you in too many different directions. This workshop is designed to teach students time management skills and how to balance all aspects of their life (mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, etc.).

Students will learn:

  • Time management and establishing priorities.
  • The wellness wheel
  • How to incorporate the wellness wheel into aspects of their lives

Date: September 27th: 2-3:30pm

 

What’s Next After Graduation?

College students, especially seniors, can feel anxious about their future after college. This workshop will teach students that they do not have to have the answers right away and give them tips and tricks to thrive in life after college.

Students will learn:

  • Tips and tricks to thrive in life after college 
  • How the transition can impact mental health 
  • How to deal with anxiety about the future

Dates: November 29th: 2-3:30pm

Request For: Campus Events, Educational Materials, Condom / Dental Dam / Lube Packets, Student Projects (Interview or Video), Workshops, etc.

All approved requests will receive a confirmation within 10 business days.

PLEASE NOTE: 

Health Promotion Specific:

  • Campus Event, Presentation, or Education material requests must be submitted at least 10 business days in advance.
  • Barrier Necessities (condoms/dental dams/lube) and Student Projects requests must be submitted at least 3 business days in advance.

Workshop Specific:

  • Requests submitted with 7 days' notice will be fulfilled as schedules allow.
  • Please include alternative dates and times.
  • Preference is given on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Only one request per program or event will be approved.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 participants.
